The City of San Bernardino is an incredibly diverse community in its people and its offerings. With the range of
offerings including 30+ parks, greenways and trails, recreation centers, soccer complexes, senior services, and
cemeteries, we have a richness of culture and heritage. The presence of a higher than national average Hispanic /
Latino and Native American population, numerous veterans and thousands of students through Cal State San
Bernardino has created a melting pot of backgrounds and cultures and one that parks, recreation and community
services can truly unite and bring together.
Community Services
The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department is dedicating the 60+ square miles of San Bernardino through parks, amenities, community centers, programs and services. The department is split into two divisions: Parks and Recreation, and Community Services. The Parks and Recreation Division is responsible for community centers, rentals, youth sports, aquatics, events, and programs throughout the City.
The Community Services Division is responsible for senior services and centers, cemetery, outdoor trails and open space, and adult sports. The department hosts city wide large events throughout the year including Festival, summer concerts, movies in the park, Arts Fest and Eggstravaganza. We are committed to engaging our community and rebuilding trust throughout the city so that our residents can feel safe and free to come to any of our parks, facilities, or events.
A Parks Master Plan is a roadmap and a shared vision for the future of parks, recreation and community services and is shaped by community values, unmet needs and evolving demographics and trends.
Did you know that spending time in parks and participating in recreation activities can improve you and your family's health? Research has consistently shown that even moderate exercise, a 30-min walk, and just time outdoors in nature boosts your physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being. From property values to economic impact and rebuilding a sense of community pride, parks and recreation provides a tremendous benefit to San Bernardino.
This plan has the following key goals
- Ensure an inclusive community outreach process to identify the community’s current needs.
- Identify trends and next practices to move San Bernardino forward
- Ensure equitable access to all parks and program offerings citywide
- Position the Department for future funding and partnership opportunities
- Co-create a community vision that is centered on equity
